The visible portion of a hair strand is a keratinized fiber. Its outer cuticle helps protect the inner cortex, which contributes much of the hair fiber's mechanical strength and physical properties.
Hair naturally experiences gradual wear, often described as hair weathering, as it is exposed to washing, brushing, friction, heat, ultraviolet radiation, and cosmetic treatments. Repeated physical and chemical stress can accelerate this process and make the fiber more vulnerable to roughness and breakage.
Dermatologists at the American Academy of Dermatology note that damaged hair becomes more fragile and therefore more likely to break. They recommend reducing practices that add unnecessary stress, including excessive heat, aggressive brushing, tight hairstyles, and repeated chemical processing.
Chemical lightening can create more substantial changes within the hair fiber. Laboratory research on peroxide bleaching has identified damage to both cuticle and cortex structures, along with oxidation and loss of hair proteins as bleaching severity increases. Research examining cosmetic treatments under scanning electron microscopy has also found greater hair-shaft damage in hair regularly exposed to procedures such as bleaching, dyeing, and straightening.
Color care therefore involves more than maintaining shade. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that coloring and perming can leave hair dry and brittle and that stronger lightening procedures generally place greater stress on the hair. Sun exposure can also contribute to weakness, dryness, roughness, brittleness, and fading in chemically treated hair.
These findings help explain why effective damaged hair care is best approached by identifying the source of stress, reducing avoidable damage, and choosing care appropriate to the current condition of the hair fiber rather than treating all forms of breakage as the same problem.
